FAMILY

"I do not want my Dad to be a Hero, I want my daddy back home..."

Kyiv citizen Vasyl Bondar was a good man, a loving father, a reliable friend, a supporter and defender of the family. He forever will remain in the memory of those who were familiar with the fallen hero.

"It all started with the first events on the Maidan. He did not stand on the sidelines, he did not watch as it turned out, despite my warnings he was there every day. At the time, Vasyl worked as a taxi driver, so he was helping as he could, fetched the products, gasoline, took out the wounded. I learned about it when my husband received a summons and said his duty was to defend the country", says Natalia the wife of the deceased.
In the war Vasyl Bondar was the driver, delivered fuel and lubricants in the ranks of the 128th detached guard mountain infantry of Transcarpathian brigade of ground forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was bringing gasoline and diesel fuel to the forefront of the boys.
In the line of fire, Vasyl Bondar constantly was in danger, but it would never stop him. "Found himself under fire, undermined on bombs, as a result with a broken leg he came home. We were very happy with the kids, because our daddy was back and everything would be okay. And it did not happen as we planned. He did not wait for complete healing of his leg; he even did not apply to hospital, a local clinic doctor made a shot and said that he could step on his foot, but the tension should be moderate. So Vasyl had already started to draw up a route of returning to his team. Once he heard that there preparations to send several fuel tankers from Kharkiv to the Russia-Ukraine conflict zone and said that he was to be one on one of them. None of persuasions, mine of our children's , did act. He said: "I do not want my kids to see what I have been through", recalls the wife of Vasyl Bondar.

The couple regularly phoned each other, Vasyl asked about the children, interested how was his beloved Natalia. He said not to worry: "Your daddy will return a hero with medals and you will be proud of me", says Natalia. "And then I called, called, and the mechanical voice of the operator just drove me crazy. I tried to drive away all the bad thoughts that shamelessly climbed to the head. I knew that husband was in Debaltseve and was dangerous there", says Natalia.

In the morning, 13 February 2015, there was a phonecall, the kind about which they say "like the ground disappeared beneath my feet." "It was our friend. I wondered why so early, because there was only 7:00 a.m. He asked me to open the door. Looking in his sad eyes, I could not imagine what kind of news he brought to me. The words "Vasyl died" sounded like a rocket exploded near", barely holding back her tears remembers the woman.

Then there were the days of searches. Terrible days which turned to weeks... "I did not tell the kids that dad was gone as long as I could. I was hoping that the guys were wrong and it was not my Vasyl. Even on the way to Kyiv, I was sure that this was a mistake and mu husband was about to call. But it was my Vasyl..." says Natalia Bondar.

At the cost of his own life Vasyl Bondar kept his promise and returned home a "Hero with medals". By the President of Ukraine Decree №282 / 2015 of 23 May 2015 for personal courage and professionalism found in the defense of national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, loyalty to the military oath", Vasyl was awarded the Order "For courage" III degree (posthumously).

Vasyl Bondar was buried March 7, 2015 in Zhytomyr region in the village Barvinky, Malyn district, the home of his wife. Now Vasyl Bondar's family - widow Natalia, son Yaroslav and daughter Olga are under the care of the public platform People Help The People. They need our support and help.

"Never give up and go forward despite all obstacles" this was the motto of my husband, and now it's our family's motto. It's hard for me without the support of the husband and for the children without father", sais the widow.

Today Vasyl Bondar's family lives in a communal apartment. After returning from the war Vasyl planned to make cosmetic repairs and replace the windows. The family has not received a home from the state, they still are in the queue. And also September 1 is approaching. They need to collect two pupils to school. The kids grow and  need new clothes, shoes, backpacks, chairs for desktops. Let us help the children of our defender.
